How Many Toilets do I need for my retail/education/commercial washroom?

When you first start your washroom project, whether it is for a shopping centre, entertainment venue, office, or other commercial location, one of the first things you should check is how many toilets you need to have on the property by law. To help you out we have created a useful guide based on the most common commercial washroom refurbishments.

However, we recommend speaking to your local authority as well to check the regulations in your area in case these are different or change in the future.

How many toilets do I need for my office/ workplace washrooms?

The requirements for an office washroom depends entirely on how many employees are at work at the same time, so make sure you check this to stay within regulations. If you are considering increasing that number in the future, then make sure you factor in your washrooms for this as well. There are also different regulations for male and female toilets which we have broken down for you below:

How many toilets do I need for a shopping centre?

Any store or shopping centre which has a retail area more than 1,000m2 has a responsibility to provide toilets for their shoppers. This is how many toilets you need based on your shopper capacity:

  • One toilet and two urinals per 500 male customers, plus one toilet per every additional 1,000 male customers and one urinal for every additional 500 male customers
  • One toilet per 500 female customers, plus one per every additional 200 female customers

How many washbasins?

  • One washbasin for one male toilet plus one for every 5 urinals
  • One washbasin for one female toilet, plus one for every two extra female toilets

How many toilets do I need for an educational washroom?

When it comes to nurseries, schools, colleges, and universities the number of toilets and washbasins you need is based on age group, as you can see below.

For pupils aged 8 or over, changing rooms and sanitary facilities should also be provided for PE, separate to the standard washrooms.

There are many guidelines you need to follow, but it is advisable to always speak to your local authority to ensure you are complying with any local laws and guidelines.

When it comes to commercial washrooms, we can provide a wide variety of different solutions to meet your requirements. From education washrooms  to entertainment and retail cubicles, we have worked on a large range of projects across the UK.
