Approved Document T provides guidelines on the design, layout, and equipment for washrooms in non-residential buildings. These updates emphasise inclusivity, safety, and proper maintenance, ensuring that all users, regardless of ability, age, or gender, can access and use the facilities.
Requirement T1 does not apply to school washrooms, to premises used for early years provision, to cellular accommodation in custodial facilities or to en-suite toilets provided in individual rooms for residential purposes, such as in hotels and care homes.
Document effective from 1st of October 2024.
Key Objectives of Approved Document T
- Inclusivity: Facilities should be accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities.
- Safety and Maintenance: Emphasis on proper management, cleanliness, and maintenance of washrooms.
- Single-Sex and Universal Toilets: Guidelines on the provision of single-sex toilets, with options for universal toilets where space allows.
Specific Requirements of Single-Sex and Universal Toilets
The guidance requires separate single-sex toilet facilities, with universal toilets as an optional addition where space permits without passing through single-sex washrooms. If space constraints prevent the installation of single-sex toilets, fully enclosed universal toilets should be provided.
- Single-Sex Toilets: Toilet cubicles with communal hand wash station which must be clearly signed and separated by gender
- Universal Toilets: Fully enclosed room or cubicle which is accessible to any gender. This room should include WC, basin and hand drying. TBS Amwell Superloo is a perfect example of how to include all necessary amenities in a fully enclosed space for added privacy and comfort.
Featuring a seamless Solid Surface vanity and toilet, along with IPS panelling to conceal plumbing and enhance aesthetics. The Superloo provides a complete and stylish solution for any commercial washroom that prioritises user privacy, hygiene, and comfort.
For additional convenience and functionality, the Superloo can include optional features like the MirrorBox. This innovative product enhances the user experience by integrating mirrors and providing extra amenities such as soap dispensers, paper towel holders, and hand dryers.
- Signage: All toilet accommodations must have clear and appropriate signage.
- Space Allocation: Once reasonable provision is made for single-sex toilets, any remaining space can be used for universal toilet provision. If no available space for male and female toilets then universal toilets can be provided.
